Problems with slow streaming? Here’s how to see DAZN, Netflix and all the others at their best

Is the streaming slow? Are Netflix, Amazon or DAZN crashing? Here’s what to do to try to fix the problem.

There are more and more streaming platforms that offer various kinds of content to viewers, some are completely free (such as RaiPlay) for others you need to subscribe instead. When you immerse yourself in the vision of this content, however, it can happen that you encounter some problems, especially with slow streaming. So what if Dazn crashes? Or what if Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney + or one of the many other streaming platforms crashes? Let’s see together how to solve this problem.

How to improve slow streaming: all we can do

It is no mystery that the arrival of the services of the DAZN site in Italy was not the best, amidst problems and disservices. It must also be said that, however, in all likelihood, not all of them are the fault of the supplier . Raise your hand if you, for example, checked your connection speed before starting to watch the game.

The good news is that to “tune in better” streaming it is not essential to be technicians or experts : most of the tricks can in fact be implemented without particular effort. Here are the main ones.

To speed up streaming, we first measure the connection speed

A popular Italian saying talks about getting blood from turnips when we try to get too much from something. Unfortunately, that also applies to streaming. In fact, to have a good quality the speed of the connection is essential . To get an idea of how much bandwidth you need, we refer to the parameters that Netflix provides, one of the few services to have an official guide on the matter, as well as some indications shared by the main experts.

The minimum required is 0.5 Megabits per second (Mb / s), although at this speed the quality leaves something to be desired. The recommended minimum for decent viewing is 1.5 Mb / s. To hope to see our streaming in high definition, the minimum is 4 Mb / s, but 5 Mb / s would be better if we want to aim for an acceptable full HD . The ability to stream video at 4K remains a utopia for many, as a minimum of real 15 Mb / s is required, but 25 would be better.

We consider that the required bandwidth can change according to the technology used by the different services, but we can use these values for a rough evaluation. One of the quickest ways to measure our connection speed is the site. Among other things, it is among the few Internet speed tests not designed for insiders to offer the stability parameter clearly indicated. Let’s remember that the stability of our connection is at least as important as speed when it comes to streaming.

What to do if the connection is slow?

Unfortunately we know that the “nominal” band that the provider offers us in the contract and the “guaranteed” band are often very different. But before challenging the contract, there are a few things we can do on our own. We have already talked about them in the guide indicated above, but let’s review them quickly here:

  • We restart the “modem” we use to connect to the Internet
  • Let’s make sure no other devices are using the network heavily

This second point in particular deserves attention: even if we are lucky enough to have a good connection, in fact, this is divided among everyone. Let’s take for example a 100 Megabit that works perfectly. If two people use it to watch streams, each will have 50 Mb / s , which is perfect. But if by pure bad luck at home there are a console, a computer and a couple of smartphones that just at that moment start downloading updates, each will have just over 15 Mb / s available .
If we consider that in Italy the average speed is just over 40 Megabit, we see that it takes much less to “nail” our streaming.

In this case, the most effective way to speed up streaming is to turn off or disconnect from the home network all devices that are not essential, to avoid “overlap”. A tip : remember that some devices, for example the latest generation game consoles, have a “silent” download mode for updates. Let’s deactivate it to avoid surprises.

Slow video loading: maybe it’s the device’s fault

If our connection speed is adequate, streaming could be slow due to the device as well. Unfortunately, we pay less and less attention to it today, but an outdated computer or device may be struggling to play a high-quality video stream . Not so much for the video stream itself, but for everything that acts as a “boundary”: operating system, App and so on. It is generally a problem most felt on computers, but mobile devices, consoles and smart TVs could also be “fatigued” if they are more than a few years old .

We restart the device to free up resources for streaming

In any case, one of the first things to do is to restart the device (except in the case of smart TVs, few models allow you to do this). Restarting a smartphone , tablet or computer is in fact the fastest way to free up resources and speed it up, as far as possible. Often, if the video “clicks” it is the fault of the memory and by doing so we should free up a certain amount of it.

Let’s avoid overdoing apps and programs

Another piece of advice, which is especially true for computers but can also help other devices, is to open only the essentials . In other words, we avoid using dozens of other sites, programs or apps while watching the stream: they could affect performance.

How old is our modem?

Among the devices to consider, there is also the one that guarantees access to the Internet. In fact, outdated models can struggle with the amount of connections required by modern devices, particularly if there are those who use the Internet intensively at home. Changing the modem to a newer model could bring several benefits. Unfortunately there is no fixed rule , it also depends on the quality of the device. Surely if we have had the same connection for several years and it has never been replaced , it might be time to change it.

To speed up streaming, we improve our local network

One of the most underrated aspects when trying to make video streaming better is our home network. Again, without getting lost in technicalities, we can approximate by saying that the less powerful the Wi-Fi signal is, the worse the connection quality. In short, hoping to see the game well with a Wi-Fi notch is utopia . If we are in this condition, we have two possibilities.

To improve streaming, we use a network cable

Wi-Fi works for almost everything, but if we need a stable and secure connection, it’s best to use a good old network cable . First of all because it “brings” an average connection speed higher, if our devices are not antediluvian. Secondly, because it suffers less from the influence of distances and interference. Finally, the communication protocol used is lighter , therefore less “demanding” for our device. But this is a nerdy detail. In any case, if we can use a cable instead of Wi-Fi, let’s use it without hesitation . Today, in 2018, all devices that have a network socket are designed to use it in “zero configuration”. Just plug it in and wait a minute.

We enhance home Wi-Fi coverage

If we can’t use a network cable, the alternative is to increase the Wi-Fi signal strength ( this guide delves into how to do it). Furthermore, some argue that, if we live in particularly crowded areas, even changing the channel of the Wi-Fi connection could improve things, due to interference. However, it’s a pretty technical setup, and how to do it varies from device to device, so let’s only try it if we have some experience.

Slow Streaming: Now our connection is at maximum

By following the steps in this guide we have the opportunity to eliminate all the causes that do not depend on us and improve streaming within our home. Unfortunately there are two aspects that we cannot control: the quality of the connection , which depends on the provider, and the quality of the service . In the first case, at the extreme we can inquire if there is an alternative provider that offers us a better connection . In the second, we can’t do much more than file a complaint and wait for things to work out.

Improving the streaming quality of DAZN: Is there a solution?

In the specific case of the DAZN service, it emerged that some users have had problems related to the infrastructure used in Italy. Most likely the problem will be temporary, but in the meantime some, more or less experienced, have done their utmost to try solutions.

One of the most popular would be to use paid VPN services . In other words, to “bounce” the connection in another state in which DAZN provides the service, trusting that the servers of that state are better than the Italian ones. However , this is not a brilliant solution , at least for a few reasons.

First of all, there is the cost issue: a VPN service suitable for high resolution streaming is an additional cost on top of the subscription we are paying for.

Then, the solution isn’t always applicable : VPN services hardly work on any device, many are platform-specific.

Finally, there is both a technical and a “bureaucratic” problem. Even if the terms of use of DAZN do not explicitly prohibit the use of VPNs, the system automatically blocks all the best known free ones, probably to avoid abuse. Using a “premium” VPN in this case exposes us to two risks: the first is that it may stop working because it is blocked by the site, the second that our account is reported for suspicious behavior, and we find ourselves without access just when there is our favorite match is scheduled.
In short, it is better to do everything possible to improve our connection , but wait for the suppliers to do the rest, without resorting to tricks that could give us problems in the future.
