NASCAR Xfinity Series, Atlanta: Ty Gibbs surprises everyone and stands out in overtime

Sport

Overtaking on the last lap and victory for Ty Gibbs in Atlanta in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. The # 54 of Gibbs Racing imposes himself for the second time in this 2021 at the end of a very tight overtime. Sixth career achievement for the 19-year-old native of North Carolina, the first in Georgia.

Domination in the first steps by Noah Gragson. The # 9 of JR Motorsports managed the first laps very well, which did not give any particular twists . On lap 22, during the competition caution, many decided to stop on the pit road by changing their strategy. AJ Allmendinger, Daniel Hemric, Myatt Snider, Kyle Weatherman, Anthony Alfredo, Landon Cassill, Riley Herbst, Jade Buford, Joe Graf Jr., Ryan Sieg, Sage Karam, Alex Labbe, Shane Lee, Jeffrey Earnhardt, Josh Williams and Jesse Iwuji are were the ones who painted, while JR Motorsports remained the leader with the # 9 Chevy

The winner of the Phoenix stage of the week, after being mocked in the sprint by teammate Josh Berry # 8, raised the white flag in the following minutes after a collision with the barriers. The overwhelming power of JR Motorsports was soon interrupted by Kaulig Racing, a team always at the top in the ‘superspeedways’.

AJ Allmendinger # 16 signed the second leg, a flying finish that preceded an accident in the short Atlanta backstretch between Anthony Alfredo, Jeb Burton, Jade Buford and Jeremy Clements. Trevor Bayne, Ty Gibbs, Austin Hill, Sheldon Creed, Brandon Jones, Joe Graf Jr., Brandon Brown, Jeffrey Earnhardt and Loris Hezemans took the opportunity not to stop in the pit lane in order to change their strategy, a mission that was partially successful thanks also to the cautions that arrived later.

Austin Hill (RCR # 21) took over the race with less than 30 laps to go, a test that was soon stopped with the first major crash coming out of turn 1-2. Bayne # 18 took the wall, Gibbs’ Supra turned around and involved other protagonists including Sam Mayer, Justin Allgaier, Josh Berry, Noah Gragson, Trevor Bayne, Jeb Burton, Alex Labbe, Sage Karam, Tommy Joe Martins and Stefan Parsons.

The challenge in Atlanta resumed, but soon stopped with a spin on the 1-2 turn for Myatt Snider, second at the time of the green flag. After a failed first overtime, Ty Gibbs was simply the best in the last two laps. The grandson of the owner of the team of the same name snatched the lead at Austin Hill at the start of the last pass, an overtaking that left no chance for rivals.
