Golf, the first Major of the season arrives. The Masters 2022 is played in Augusta

Finally here we are, the week of the first Major of the 2022 season has arrived, Thursday begins the 86th edition of the Masters Tournamentt. The show will naturally take place at the traditional Augusta National Golf Club , with its very difficult greens that often tend to trap inexperienced players, giving a great advantage to those with previous experience here.

With a green jacket and over $ 2 million awarded to the winner of this prestigious event, Masters 2022 will as always be one of the most important events of the entire international calendar . It starts from the victory of Hideki Matsuyama last year, the first Japanese ever to impose himself in this tournament and in the Major in general. Unfortunately his participation this year is in strong doubt due to an injury that forced him to retire at the Valero Texas Open just 4 days ago. It is therefore difficult to imagine that the Japanese would be able to give an encore, an extremely rare event in Augusta, which never happened after Tiger Woods’ double in 2001 and 2002.

As with Matsuyama, Woods’ presence is also in doubt. The American phenomenon, five-time winner of the Masters, has announced that his presence will be decided at the last possible moment and that he will continue to train to try. His legendary victory in 2019 was unforgettable, which marked Woods’ return to major success 11 years after the last time.

On the other hand, the Spaniard Jon Rahm will certainly be there and will equally certainly try to compete for the victory, fifth last year and very suitable for the course. Rahm has also just lost the leadership in the world ranking and will want to try to make up for it immediately. Taking it off was 25-year-old Scottie Scheffler, clearly the best player so far this season. Scheffler has done very well on the last two occasions around here, hitting two top 20s, but with the game shown so far, he is certainly among the candidates for victory.

The list of potential winners certainly does not end here: it is impossible not to mention the ruler of the 2020 tournament Dustin Johnson who is returning to express himself on his stellar levels. Also worth keeping an eye on are Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay, always very dangerous on the most insidious paths, without forgetting experienced players who have already won in the majors such as Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy. Two are the bearers of Italy, Francesco Molinari and Guido Migliozzi , both looking for confirmation and the best form. Everyone will want to try to put the iconic green jacket on their shoulders, the fight will be wonderful as always on a path that forgives very few mistakes.

The Augusta National course was designed by Jones and Alister MacKenzie and inaugurated in January 1933. It is a classic par 72 of 7,425 yards, with the mother characteristic of having very fast and wavy bentgrass greens. The swirling winds that sporadically reach Augusta have made some of the holes on the course iconic, particularly at the par 3 of the twelve where the gusts can really come in in any direction and change quickly.

The fairways are often narrow and above all have different slopes that make the approach shots to the green very different, often rewarding those who excels in this component of the game. Obviously, it is also essential to manage the putt in the best possible way, on very complicated greens. The most fascinating point of the complex remains the traditional and extremely difficult triptych of the Amen Corne r, which includes the only area where water plays a predominant role: from the shot to the green of the 11, passing through the 12 and finally with the par 5 of the 13, certainly a recovery hole but which in the past has been able to give shots of incredible beauty and decide entire Masters.
