After a very long wait, the brand new F1 cars finally hit the track in Barcelona for three interesting days of testing. There are many ideas after the first chronometric results, as always not very indicative and to be taken with due caution . In fact, we do not know the work and above all the fuel loads used for fast laps.
The teams chose different programs for these three days even though all the riders completed three of the six scheduled sessions. McLaren, Alpine, AlphaTauri and Red Bull were the teams that favored the commitment of a single protagonist with the exception of the last day when for reasons of time it was chosen to alternate the two standard bearers.
These teams proved to be among the most present on the track even if there were problems for the French who yesterday had to raise the white flag in the morning with the Spaniard Fernando Alonso, out due to a hydraulic problem. Difficulty also for AlphaTauri, on the wall with Gasly in the morning shortly after the failure of the Asturian.
The work between the teams was different, Red Bull impressed especially on day-1 with the Dutchman Max Verstappen who showed an incredible consistency with 147 steps taken. Despite everything, a small failure at the exchange rate has ‘lowered the average’ of the Austrian team which on the second day lost time with the Mexican Sergio Perez. Even Mercedes did not hold back with a different strategy thanks to an alternation between the British Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Long work for the seven-time world champion despite the ‘lost’ laps in the afternoon of the third day following the test with the wet tires wanted by Pirelli.
Ferrari made the same choice, which yesterday reached 2000 kilometers. The Monegasque Charles Leclerc and the Spaniard Carlos Sainz worked hard on the last day when the time trial was set aside for a specific job that satisfied the leaders of Maranello. Absolute record for the two who were the only ones to never have problems, an almost perfect three groups in view of the season.
Mercedes and Ferrari are therefore added to the aforementioned list of teams present several times on the track in Barcelona. Alpine lost on day 3, the day most affected by a variety of errors such as that of Gasly who damaged the front in turn 5.
Failure also for Aston Martin, a day to forget for Alfa Romeo with the Chinese Guanyu Zhou. Small break for all the teams who are now preparing to evaluate all the data collected and leave for Manama for the dress rehearsal in view of the F1 2022 World Championship.
