The 2022 Davis Cup begins. It starts again with the 110th edition of the oldest tennis tournament in the world; the adventure of Filippo Volandri’s Italy will begin this weekend at the NTC Arena in Bratislava in the preliminary round against Slovakia, who qualified thanks to the 3-1 victory over Chile dating back to last September.
The Azzurri will present themselves in a revised version at this meeting in Slovakia; if Matteo Berrettini had already announced the forfeit before the abdominal injury suffered in Acapulco, Fabio Fognini also had to raise the white flag after his excellent week in Rio de Janeiro where he had won the doubles tournament with Simone Bolelli. Jannik Sinner will therefore be the leading player of Italy, accompanied by Lorenzo Sonego, Lorenzo Musetti, Stefano Travaglia and Simone Bolelli.
On the other hand, the most dangerous threat is represented by Alex Molcan : the twenty-four of Presov is a player in clear growth in the last year, fresh from the best ranking at number 66 (286 on March 3, 2021) and who last May the whim of participating in the first final of his career in the major circuit in Belgrade is removed, losing to Novak Djokovic . With him the other singles will be Norbert Gombos and Filip Horansky, while the double will see Filip Polasek , number 13 in the charts, and Igor Zelenay as protagonists.
Only a precedent between Italy and Slovakia in the Davis Cup, dating back to the second round of the Euro-African group of the 2009 edition. A fairly clear success for the Azzurri on the red clay in Cagliari. Corrado Barazzutti relied on Potito Starace, Fabio Fognini and Flavio Cipolla to be able to defeat his opponents, led by the former number 12 in the world and for years the beacon of the Slovak movement now in decline Dominik Hrbaty : the blues had an easy life with the latter and Lukas Lacko, winning all the singles matches and leaving the only point to his opponents only in the doubles match, to Michal Mertinak and Filip Polasek, still present on the field thirteen years later.
