Stellantis: gigafactory construction in Termoli confirmed

Stellantis will build a gigafactory in Termoli, as part of the Automotive Cells Company program, while Mercedes-Benz enters.

Stellantis confirms that it has chosen Termoli for the construction of the third European gigafactory of the Automotive Cells Company. The announcement coincides with the signing of the definitive agreement for the entry of Mercedes-Benz into the shareholding structure of the joint venture with TotalEnergies and of a letter of intent with the Ministry of Economic Development.

Together with the other two partners, the Italian-French conglomerate, led by Carlos Tavares, aims to support ACC’s development plans. Which will go beyond the conversion of the Molise engine plant into a battery plant . In fact, the purpose is to expand the development and production of latest generation cells and modules for high performance accumulators . Meanwhile, industrial capacity will grow to 120 GWh by 2030.

By the end of the decade, the structures currently under construction in Kaiserslautern (Germany) and Douvrin (France) will make a significant leap in quality. In fact, from the 24 gigawatt hours per year of batteries initially established, each will generate at least 40.

The Termoli site should have similar dimensions, even if, at least for now, no clarifications have been provided on the main terms of the initiative, including planned investments and employment impact. In any case, the allocated budget would amount to at least 2 billion euros . This is also thanks to the support guaranteed by the Government in the framework of projects of community interest endorsed by the European Union. In this regard, the Acc revealed that a memorandum of understanding was signed on 21 March “to formalize the will of the shareholders to invest in Italy and of the Italian authorities to support this investment” .

In commenting on recent developments, Tavares limited himself to declaring that the investment will ensure the future of the great community of Termoli . “Transforming the existing plant to contribute to the creation of a more sustainable future positions Acc as a European leader in the production of batteries and reaffirms, thanks to the collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Development, the role of Italy in supporting the transformation of Stellantis into a ‘technology company dedicated to sustainable mobility ” , concluded the Portuguese manager.
